In Farrell, we only have 3 working channels. Being so limited we were almost always stuck putting two mics up and could never do much close micing to the piano or anything else.
I found if you put the KM-184s in a semi NOS semi A-B format, about 16 inches above performers head and 4-5 feet away, you get a decent blend with piano and solo, as well has getting a decent ambience. The Ambience in Farrell is much warmer than in PAH. If you put one of the Crown PZM (omni) mics in the piano (short stick) the mic gives the piano a little more presence, the mix can then be adjusted up or down to taste for piano presence to an extent. In doing this the Ambience isn't in your face, but it for sure exist. The Piano doesn't sound washy, and the solo instrument is also crisper. The mic on the piano also give the piano much more bottom than just relying on the KM-184s for total piano.
