ORTF & NOS
ORTF.jpg

This is ORTF: two matched, uni-directional (cardioid) microphones placed at a 110 degree angle (note 110 is just slightly wider than a right - or 90 degree - angle) with the capsules approximately 17 cm apart.

The spacing (just under 7 inches) is more consistent than the angle. Usually a full 110 degrees (as pictured here) would be used for a large ensemble. Smaller ensembles might better be captured better by a 90 degree angle. Soloists with piano accompaniment usually require an even narrower angle (30-70 degrees) and closer positioning.

If placed and angled correctly, this technique usually yields a decent recording. As such, it (or NOS - see below) is the default approach used in the DOM. The mics in the pictures are our Neumann KM 184s. These are usually the preferred mics, although we also have other cardioid mics at our disposal.

Try NOS, which spaces the mics further apart (about 12 inches) and has a starting angle of 90 degrees. Retain the distance between mics, but experiment with mic angle depending upon the width of the performance ensemble or the desired general effect.
